Romancing the Brahmaputra: A Journey through the Heart of North East India

The Mighty Bhrahmaputra

Rivers are much more than mundane and random masses of flowing waters. They are but ecosystems that support life thriving on their banks in all its myriad forms and fashions. Even more, they are cultural blueprints – carriers of human tales and folklore from aeons ago, when man first learned to set home and hearth, settling along their banks. They have long nestled civilizations in their bosom, nurturing and nursing humanity through its struggles - for survival, expansion and self-expression.

The Brahmaputra River, geologically the youngest among the major river systems in the world, is known to many as a ‘moving ocean’. One of India’s longest rivers, it drains such diverse terrains as the cold dry plateau of Tibet, the rain-drenched Himalayan slopes, the landlocked alluvial plains of Assam and the vast deltaic lowlands of Bangladesh.

Incidentally, the only ‘male river’ in India, the Brahmaputra, is a force de majeure across all the lands it drains, but particularly comes into its own once it enters the land of Assam and acquires its full force and glory. The river deeply impacts the various facets of life and of people who have inhabited its banks since times immemorial. All aspects of their lives, be it their religious beliefs, social, economic, political or cultural mores, all are deeply entwined around the primal nature of the magnificent river – its benevolence, kindness and fury all rolled together as one. The river sits firmly ensconced in their lore and songs, their timeless melodies, their fervent prayers, their abominable fears and their pyrrhic dreams. No wonder, it has been variously known as the ‘sorrow’ and the ‘provider’ of Assam.

The river system is the lifeline for countless people that have inhabited its banks since times immemorial
